Winding mountain road approaching Dharamshala

Dharamkot sits just above McLeod Ganj in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, at around 2,100 m. There's no airport in the village and no train to the door — getting here always ends with a mountain road and a short walk. Here's every route.

Quick answer

Most travellers do one of these:

  1. Overnight bus from Delhi to McLeod Ganj/Dharamshala (cheapest, most common), then a taxi up.
  2. Fly to Gaggal (Dharamshala) Airport, then a 45–60 min taxi.
  3. Train to Pathankot, then bus or taxi (3–4 hours of mountain road).

From Delhi by bus (the classic route)

The overnight Volvo/AC buses from Delhi are how most backpackers arrive. They leave in the evening from Kashmere Gate ISBT or Majnu Ka Tila, and from private operators around the city, reaching McLeod Ganj or lower Dharamshala in 10–12 hours.

  • HRTC (government) and private Volvo operators both run the route. Book a day or two ahead in peak season.
  • Buses terminate at McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala bus stand. From McLeod Ganj you're only a 15–20 minute taxi from Dharamkot.

Tip

Book a bus that goes to McLeod Ganj, not just Dharamshala. McLeod is higher and much closer to Dharamkot — otherwise you'll add an extra taxi leg up the hill.

By air

The nearest airport is Gaggal / Kangra Airport (DHM), about 20 km below Dharamshala. Flights are limited and mostly connect to Delhi, and they're weather-sensitive. From Gaggal, take a prepaid taxi to Dharamkot (about 45–60 minutes).

If flights are full or pricey, flying to Delhi and taking the overnight bus is often the more reliable plan.

By train

There's no broad-gauge line to Dharamshala. Options:

  • Pathankot is the nearest major railhead (~85 km). From there, take a bus or taxi for the 3–4 hour climb.
  • The scenic Kangra Valley toy train runs from Pathankot toward Kangra — beautiful but slow, and you'll still need a taxi for the last leg.

The last stretch: into the village

Here's what surprises first-timers: taxis can't drive into Dharamkot's lanes. The road brings you to the village edge (lower or upper Dharamkot), and from there the narrow paths are walking-only. Depending on your guesthouse, expect a 5–20 minute uphill walk with your bags.

Heads up

Travel light if you can, and message your guesthouse in advance to ask exactly where the taxi should drop you — "upper" and "lower" Dharamkot involve very different amounts of climbing with a backpack.
